Join us this Saturday, January 14, 2017, for our first meeting of the year. Our very own Marie Lark will lead an interactive plotting workshop to help you get your writing year off to a great start:
Plotter or Pantser, 8 elements every novel plot needs. Whether you’re a detailed outliner or prefer to fly by the seat of your pants when planning and writing your novel, everyone needs a few guidelines to make sure their book hangs together in a coherent way and isn’t a collection of random, unrelated events and characters. This workshop will take you through the eight elements every story needs, from the big, over-arching story goal or the problem your main characters want to solve, to the background, contextual elements that will flesh out your world with compelling, plot- and character-relevant details. Be ready to work with your current WIP or to brainstorm your next project!
At our January meeting, the members of CRRWA took the time to celebrate each other’s achievements for 2014. I was amazed and impressed by the sheer number of tasks, goals and writing that our authors completed in just 365 days. Our wonderful Hospitality Committee took up the task of compiling data on all our members. At the chapter meeting, KA Mitchell and Anna Bowling showed us just how accomplished our writers are.
Twenty members filled out a survey. KA crunched the numbers. Here are some quick stats:
90% Finished a work of fiction
70% Submitted a work to a publisher or agent
45% Pitched to an editor/agent
45% Contracted a work of fiction
10% Became a member of PRO
5% Became a member of PAN
5% Hit a Best Seller’s list
5% Were RITA Finalists
I know stats are a funny thing (especially for those of us who work mainly with words). It’s plain to see that Capital Region RWA is a working chapter. We have a total of about thirty-two members. With over 60% of the chapter answering the survey, I think these stats accurately represent this amazing chapter. Eighteen members surveyed finished a work of fiction. Fourteen submitted their work. And for the first time, we had a RITA finalist, Jeanette Grey.
One of our newer members, Marie Lark, published Stripped Down in May, 2014.
Deborah Nolan, another of our long time members, published Second Act for Carrie Armstrong in January of 2014.
Tracey Lyons, another of our founders, published two books this year, The Spy who Learned to Love (a historical) and The Wedding Toast (a Kindle Worlds novella).
I cannot begin to tell you how proud and humble I am to know and work with these writers. I learn something new about writing at every meeting, whether it be craft, marketing or just dealing with juggling the writing life. CRRWA is not just a hardworking group of writers. They are friends, coworkers, confidants and mentors. I am so honored to be the president of this amazing group. Come visit us and join our family.
Our members continue to amaze us. Here’s what they’ve accomplished this month:
K.A. Mitchell will be attending the Toronto Book Fair November 15 at the Toronto Convention Center.
Marie Lark finished her first full-length novel. It is a new adult contemporary romance.
Lisa Lewis has completed a seventeen thousand word novella, and it is ready to submit.
The cover reveal for Autumn Jones Lake’s Corrupting Cinderella (Lost Kings MC #2) will take place on November 12, 2014. The book releases December 2, 2014.
Rebecca Grace Allen’s debut, The Duality Principle, releases November 11, 2014. The novella received a 4½ star review from Romance Times, and was reviewed in Library Journal and Heroes and Heartbreakers.
We look forward to celebrating even more of their successes at our next meeting on December 13, 2014.
Jean C. Gordon signed a new three book contract with Love Inspired. The working title of the first book is Winning The Teacher’s Heart. Also, her book Small-Town Mom is being released in print in South Africa.
Jeanette Grey sold her fifth book to Samhain Publishing. Through The Static is a category-length futuristic novel, and it has a release date of January 2015.
Marie Lark‘s second book, Stripped Down, was released from Ellora’s Cave on May 9, 2014.
